Salam by Muad – Why isn’t this track more popular?

Muad: Salam Download | Lyrics

Muad’s 2020 album Home features one of the most catchy Nasheeds of all time – Salam (mp3 available on Amazon).

Brimero Entertainment released the track back in 2018, but it seems to have gone unnoticed with only 85k Youtube hits over the past two years. Contrast that with Harris J’s 109 million for his debut song Salam Alaikum and it’s no comparison.

So why hasn’t Muads track gained popularity?

While Muad has been singing for years, he only released his debut album in February 2020. A few weeks later came the lockdown which was bound to have had an impact on marketing and promotion.

It’s such a catchy tune, i’m sure it wont take long before Nasheed fans have it playing on repeat – with Allah’s help.

What is Salam about?

While it’s not a deep track, it encourages us to spread positive vibes and love to others across the world. This can be acheived through one simple greeting… you guessed it… Salam Alaikum!

There is ample benefit to greeting one another with Salam.

The Iqra Foundation summarises five benefits to saying Salam:

Greeting others with a Salaam and Smile in a social gathering creates a welcoming environment and a sense of belonging.

Sending greetings on family members especially parents, children, or spouse makes them feel loved, cared for and important!

Greeting others with kindness helps remove hard feelings – and reduces the chance of us unknowingly hurting someone’s feelings.

Sending Salaam on someone (asking Allah swt to grant peace and protection on them) increases our chances of having the same Dua made for us.

The Prophet (s) said, the best aspect of Islam is Feeding the hungry, and saying Salaam to those you know and those you don’t know.” (Bukhari and Muslim)

Iqra Foundation

The emphasis on saying Salam is mentioned in the Quran too

“But when you enter the houses, greet one another with a greeting from God blessed and good”

(Quran 24:61)

As well as various Hadith:

“The one who is riding should greet the one who is walking and the one who is walking should greet the one who is sitting and the smaller group should greet the larger group”

(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, 6234; Muslim, 2160)

But what does Salam mean?

The word Salam literally means ‘Peace’. Asalamu Alaikum means ‘Peace be upon you’.

We are literally spreading peace around the world by saying Salam.

A typical response to Salam would be wa-‘alaykumu as-salam which means ‘Peace be upon you too’.

It gets more complicated.

Those wishing to use the full version can say: as-salamu ʿalaykum as-salam wa-rahmatullahi wa-barakatuh. This means peace be upon you, as well as the mercy of God and His blessings

If you are greeted with the longer version, you may reply with an even longer: wa-ʿalaykum as-salam wa-rahmatullahi wa-barakatuh

The following children’s video sums it up:

Abdul & Ishaan- Assalamoalaikum

There is no official music video for the song, however a lyrics video was released on the Brimero Entertaiment YouTube channel back in 2018.

Lyrics Analysis

References to the Quran and Hadith have been numbered above, and explained in this section.

1 – The Importance of Salam

Lyric we’re analysing: Salam Alaikum

We have already gone into great detail about the importance of this greeting. Perhaps the most important Quranic quote related to Salam is as follows:

When those who believe in Our Ayat (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) come to you, say: “salamun ‘Alaikum (peace be on you); your Lord has written (prescribed) Mercy for Himself, so that if any of you does evil in ignorance, and thereafter repents and does righteous good deeds (by obeying Allah), then surely, He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

(Quran 6:54)

2 – Traveling is encouraged in Islam

Lyric we’re analysing: See the world

The Quran actually encourages us to travel through the earth the see Allah’s signs. This might include the wonders of Allah, or evidence of Allah’s destruction upon people who went astray.

We can travel for trade or to explore:

Your Sustainer is He who causes the ships to move on for you through the sea so that you may go about in quest of some of His bounty: verily Most Merciful is He towards you.

(Quran 17:66)

We can travel for recreation:

Lawful for you is all water-game, and all the catch of the sea, as enjoyment for you and for those who travel.

(Quran 5:96)

Or travel to learn from the past

Have they not travelled through the Earth and deeply observed the consequences for those who were before them?

(Quran 40:82)

A song by nasheed artist Muslim Belal comes to mind upon hearing these lyrics. He wrote a song titled Traveller where he sings about visiting all parts of the world.

Final Thoughts

This is one of the most up-beat Islamic songs i’ve heard. I love it!

I feel this track should gain in popularity over time, and perhaps compete with the similar track by Harris J.
