Harris J: The One Download (UK |US)
Positive message, but I feel it’s lacking that special something…
As with all Harris’ tracks, The One is well produced and gives out a good message. Maher Zain was actually one of the writers for this one, a well-known artist.
The track places importance on the oneness of God, and how we should put our trust and faith in him.
As usual I have presented the lyrics below and picked out key verses to discuss, in reference to Quran and Hadith.
Before continuing I strongly suggest supporting Harris by buying the track, as opposed to a free download. I’ve found the easiest way is through Amazon. The app is just like Spotify but cheaper. Go for the trial:
Harris J – The One Lyrics
When I learnt for the first time
I know my heart wasn’t prepared
For just how much You’d mean to me
But Allah, how I know now
That a life without You there
Is like a bird without its wings
Chorus:
You are The One – 1
In my life
Always right there beside me – 2
I’m so blessed
You’re The One
In my life
Always right there to guide me – 3
Giving me strength
You’re The One
Oh, oh, oh, oh
I’m not saying I’m perfect
I haven’t read all the pages – 4
But I know that You’re The One
It’s the way that You turn mess
Into a beautiful message
It’s You I place my trust upon
CHORUS
Forever I won’t be afraid – 5
With You right here I’ll be OK
‘Cause everything about You is the truth
Whenever I call out Your Name
Lift up my hands, bow down to pray
I feel so good, it’s all because of You
CHORUS
Links to Quran / Hadith
Links to the Quran and hadith have been numbered above (in purple) and presented below.
1 You are The One
One of the most commonly recited chapters of the Quran is Surah Ikhlas, which many recite during the prayer. This is a four line definition of Allah, and includes his most important attribute – that he is one:
“Say: He is Allah, the One! (1) Allah, the eternally Besought of all! (2) He begetteth not nor was begotten. (3) And there is none comparable unto Him. (4)” (Quran 112:1-4)
2 Always right there beside me
Allah is close to us, as mentioned in the Quran:
“And When My Slaves Ask You (O Muhammad) Concerning Me, Then (Answer Them), I Am Indeed Near (To Them By My Knowledge). I Respond To The Invocations Of The Supplicant When He Calls On Me (Without Any Mediator Or Intercessor). So Let Them Obey Me And Believe In Me, So That They May Be Led Aright” (Qur’an 2:186)
3 Always right there to guide me
“Verily, you guide not whom you like, but Allah guides whom He wills. And He knows best those who are the guided” (Quran 28:56)
4 I haven’t read all the pages
Interesting one. While it’s important to read the scripture it’s also a reality that many Muslims have not read the entire book. I feel this line is beneficial as it helps people relate to the singer. We are not perfect but should strive towards knowledge, as mentioned in the Quran:
“And say: My Lord increase me in knowledge“ (Qur’an, Ta-Ha 20:114)
5 Forever I won’t be afraid
I partly agree. We are taught not to fear anyone in the Quran, except Allah:
“And believe in what I reveal, confirming the revelation which is with you, and be not the first to reject Faith therein, nor sell My Signs for a small price; and fear Me, and Me alone” (Quran 2:41)
Final Thoughts
The One is well produced and has a positive message, but loses points on originality.
Tracks like this help draw closer to Allah, and that can only be a good thing.
