Harris J - I Promise

I Promise – Harris J

Harris J: I Promise Download (UK | US)

I Promise is all about having love and respect for your parents. At a concert in Indonesia, Harris stated that this was currently his favourite track on the album.

There are many nasheeds that talk about the importance of parents, particularly the mother. Examples include Mothers Love by Safe Adam; and My Mother by Sami Yusuf.

Let’s go through the lyrics, as usual we will look out for any references to Quran and Hadith.

Harris J – I Promise Lyrics

I promise anytime you call me
It don’t matter where I am
I’ll always be there, like you’ve been there – 1
If you need me closer, I’ll be right over
I swear, I swear

Every time that I need you by my side
Every time I lose my way in life
You’re my circle of life, compass and guide
There behind me
And one day when the tables finally turn
And it’s me you’re depending on
I’ll put you first, hold you close
Like you taught me
Know that I’ll be there for you, for you

Chorus:
I promise anytime you call me
It don’t matter where I am
I’ll always be there, like you’ve been there
If you need me closer, I’ll be right over
I swear, I swear
I promise anytime you call me
It don’t matter where I am
I’ll always care for you, go anywhere for you
If you need me closer, I’ll be right over
I swear, ooh

There are days when I just don’t want to talk
And your feelings hit a wall
But that won’t change
The love you’ve raised inside this family
Everything that I do is to make you proud
I just want to say it, and say it loud
You’re my heat when I’m cold
The place I call home, and always will be
Know that I’ll be there for you, for you

CHORUS

Having someone to go to
Having someone to love
Having both is a blessing
That was sent from above
Oh I know that wherever I’ll go
You’ll be forever in my heart

CHORUS

Links to Quran / Hadith

Links to the Quran and hadith have been numbered above (in purple) and presented below.

1 I’ll always be there, like you’ve been there

There is great importance placed on looking after your parents in Islam:

“And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. And that you be dutiful to your parents. If one of them or both of them attain old age in your life, say not to them a word of disrespect, nor shout at them but address them in terms of honour.” (Quran 17:23)

“And We have enjoined on man (to be dutiful and good) to his parents. His mother bore him in weakness and hardship upon weakness and hardship, and his weaning is in two years give thanks to Me and to your parents, unto Me is the final destination.” (Quran 31:14)

Respect towards the mother is strongly emphasised in hadith:

“A man came to the Prophet and said, ‘O Messenger of God! Who among the people is the most worthy of my good companionship? The Prophet said: Your mother. The man said, ‘Then who?’ The Prophet said: Then your mother. The man further asked, ‘Then who?’ The Prophet said: Then your mother. The man asked again, ‘Then who?’ The Prophet said: Then your father” (Bukhari, Muslim).

Final Thoughts

While the message is not unique, I feel many young people can benefit from songs of this nature.

Once again Awakening records have produced a good sounding, positive track – I like it

Now I have a question for you… who tends to enjoy this song more in your household – the parents or kids?

Leave your comments below, I will read them… I promise
