Finding a Prayer Room in central London isn’t always easy.

For example, let’s say you’re out shopping on Oxford Street and you have 15 minutes until Maghrib ends. So, you Google the closest Mosque but it shows up as being 30 minutes away.

Where do you pray?

Sometimes a prayer room is just around the corner. Perhaps hidden inside a hospital or department store.

In our example above, the Selfridges prayer room would be much more convenient. But, it is unlikely to show up for a ‘Mosque’ search on Google Maps.

So, we made our own Google map that contains every Masjid and Prayer Room in Central London.

The map contains Mosques and Prayer rooms in Zone 1. Furthermore, it covers prayer rooms in Hospitals, Universities, department stores as well as Jummah halls (i.e. halls that are hired for Jummah only, and used for other activities outside these hours).

But who am I?

How do I know about these prayer rooms?

My name is Faisal and I have been working in central London since 2013. As a contractor, I have worked in several central London locations, and visited many of the prayer rooms and Mosques on the list. With each listing on the map, I have specified whether the information comes from a personal visit, or from the web.

Shahjalal Jame Masjid (Euston Mosque)

Shahjalal Jame Masjid (also known as Euston Mosque) is the closest Mosque to Euston station, located on the west side.

There is no specific women’s section. According to one sister, the Mosque is happy to provide prayer space for Women on request. However, I have received other feedback from sisters claiming they were not allowed in. Please email [email protected] if you have any updates on this.

Chalton Street Masjid

Located in-between Euston and Kings Cross Station, Chalton Street Mosque is a small Masjid with capacity for approximately 100 people. The Masjid is open to men only at this stage.

University College London (UCL) Prayer Room

Prayer Room inside UCL (University College London). Technically this prayer room is open to Students only. There are facilities for prayer and meditation on Floor B2 of the Student Centre. These include a large prayer room with ablution facilities attached, and a smaller room for silent prayer and meditation.

Al Rahman Mosque and Community Centre

This Mosque is close to Mornington Crescent station, which is in Zone 2 of Central London. However, if you are anywhere north of Euston this may be your closest Mosque. The Mosque is open for all 5 daily prayers and Jummah. However, there is no facility for women.

University College Hospital Prayer Room

Prayer room inside University College Hospital. Walk through the main entrance and immediately take a right down the corridor (Parallel to the main road). The prayer rooms are at the end of the corridor, and there are facilities for both men and women.

Muslim World League London Office

The Muslim World League London office and also a large Mosque, located in a four-storey building. This Mosque is open to both men and women and there is a cafe serving lunch on the second floor.

The Masjid can get busy during Jummah prayers and as a result they open all four floors to accommodate as many people as possible. Furthermore, the garage and back room are open for prayer, accessed via a separate entrance on Goodge Place.

Famous Imams, such as Imam Ajmal Masroor, have delivered Khutbahs at this Masjid.

Soho Islamic Centre

Small Mosque in the heart of Soho, open for five daily prayers and Jummah. There are two prayer rooms, one on the ground floor and another upstairs, with Wudu facilities in the basement.

We are lucky to have a Masjid at this location. However, it does not have space for women. Furthermore, many women have posted reviews saying they were turned away for trying to pray here. Hopefully the situation changes soon!

Also, please be mindful that the Mosque is located in Soho, an area famous for nightlife and adult stores. It’s not a huge problem during the day. However, you may find it better to avoid walking through Walker’s Court.

St Thomas’ Hospital Prayer Room

Located on the Ground floor of the South Wing of St Thomas’ Hospital. The prayer room is close to the London Eye and Big Ben, and open to both men and women. Not to be confused with ‘Guys and St Thomas Hospital’, which is located near London bridge.

London South Bank University Prayer Room

Prayer room located in South Bank University. However, the prayer room is for students and staff only. The Prayer rooms are in the Borough Road Building; easiest way to find them is to enter through the Borough Road Building entrance. As you pass the barriers, on the right of the stairs is a door leading to a corridor that leads to the Elephant Film Studios.

A multi-faith prayer room is located on Level 2, Green Side, Royal Festival Hall, offering a quiet retreat for prayer. The door code is available from the Welcome Desk on Level 2. Furthermore, the prayer room is open to men and women, segregated by a screen.

Prayer room located in Franklin Wilkins Building of Kings College. The prayer rooms are for staff and students only. However, many of the security guards are Muslim and may allow you to use the facilities. I’d suggest only using this as a last resort. Because, the Southbank Centre is available around the corner.

Kings Cross Mosque and Islamic Cultural Centre

This Mosque is walking distance from Kings Cross station, located south. The Mosque is open for five daily prayers and Jummah, with prayer facilities for both men and women. The Masjid is easy to miss from the outside. So, look for the Sandfield building and walk through the green gate opposite, marked with the Mosque name as shown in the picture below.

Prayer Room located inside London City University. However, this prayer room is for students only. Depending on the entrance used there may be no security gate to pass through. The prayer room opening and closing times are presently from 12pm to 9pm (Monday to Friday). Masjid open for all prayers, however sometimes locked before Duhur. It’s a small Mosque and therefore has no prayer space for women. Prayer room in the basement with a small wudu room on the ground floor. This is an unmarked Mosque, located between a barber shop and pharmacy.

There are a couple Multi-faith prayer rooms located at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital, which is located near London Bridge Underground station.

The first one is located on the ground floor of the Tower Wing of Guy’s hospital. Open 8am to 7pm.

Baitul Aziz Islamic Cultural Centre

Baitul Al Aziz Islamic Cultural Centre holds around 2500 people and also provides facilities for women. It is a multi cultural Mosque as Muslim men and women from different ethnicity come to pray and send their children to study Arabic. The Mosque is open for all five daily prayers and Jummah.

Take on Borough Road Building entrance, then on the right of the stairs, there is a small corridor which leads to Elephant film studio. Get inside and go straight through the corridor until your reach the end. WBWT Community & Prayer Centre

Mosque near Pimlico and Victoria Underground station. The Mosque is open for Duhur, Asr, Maghrib and Isha prayers, as well as Jummah. It’s a small Mosque. However, they have gone the extra mile by providing space for women despite the size.

The WBWT have offered prayer facilities since 2015, which are actively utilised by the local multi-cultural Muslim community.

Perfect central location. Holborn Mosque is not the largest Mosque in Central London, but a great size. Furthermore, there are spaces for both men and women. Women should use the side door and head up the stairs that are located at the back of the main prayer room.

It gets busy during Jummah. Therefore, the Women’s prayer hall is often used as an overflow area to accommodate men (as it’s compulsory for men to attend the Jummah prayer). The congregation flows outside onto the paving. However it is managed extremely well.

BBC Community Centre Mosque

Close to Liverpool Street and Aldgate East Station. BBC Community Centre Mosque serves the local Muslim community with daily prayer and Jummah services. It’s open to men only, and doors are locked outside of Jamat times. The Mosque is a short walk from Brick Lane, where there are plenty of Halal food options available.

Brick Lane Mosque

Large Mosque on Brick Lane, previously a Synagogue. The Mosque accommodates both men and women, and there are wudu facilities available. The Mosque is open for all five daily prayers and Jummah. Furthermore, the Mosque offers funeral services, Madrasa and Marital Service.

Brick Lane houses a number of Halal takeaways and restaurants.

SOAS University Prayer Room

Prayer rooms for men and women exist within SOAS University. However, these are for students only and there may be an ID check upon entry. 

Room L65 (in the basement) is used for men and there is an ID check required to enter the building.

The Brunei Gallery (Building Opposite) houses the female prayer room, which is located on the 1st or 2nd floor, at the end of the corridor. Currently, there is no ID check to enter this building. However, it is not recommended unless you are a student or visitor of the University.

Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children Prayer Room

Prayer room inside the Hospital, and a short walk from Russell Square. 

The Muslim Prayer Room is located on Level 3 of the Southwood Building. This is also open at all times. There are facilities for men and women, and Jummah is conducted at the site.

Al-Khair Foundation’s £300,000 grant has made it possible for patients, family and staff to enjoy a new, dedicated space for prayer and reflection at the world-renowned hospital in London.

Ground floor prayer room in the Royal Marsden Hospital. Follow the signs from the main reception. The prayer room is open to both men and women.

The women’s section is separated by a curtain rather than a separate room. Furthermore, the Women’s prayer room contains hijabs available to use.

Prayer Room on the ground floor of St Mary’s Hospital. The Muslim prayer room has separate ablution facilities for men and for women, and women are invited to pray in the multi-faith room, which is next door to the Muslim prayer room. Furthermore, these spaces are provided for patients, their families and staff, for private and congregational prayer.

London Central Mosque / Regents Park Mosque

London Central Mosque, also known as Regents Park Mosque, is the largest Mosque in Central London.

The rich history of the Islamic Cultural Centre dates back to when a piece of land was originally presented as a gift to the Muslim Community by the British Government and from which the Centre was officially inaugurated by His Majesty King George VI in November 1944.

That’s right. The Mosque was a gift from the British government!

It’s a huge purpose built Masjid, with several facilities that are not present in many Mosques.

So, what are these facilities?

– Large prayer hall for Women on Mezzanine level, with views of the Imam
– An Islamic shop
– A Restaurant / Cafe in the basement
– Large multi-functional hall used for weddings, events and fun days
– Underground car park
– Courtyard

– Accommodation
– A large Chandelier

Ramadan

Free Iftar is provided during Ramadan, guests queue outside a small tent where food boxes are distributed.

Additionally, families are allowed to sit together in the court yard or lower ground foyer areas to open their fast. And, many people will hand out their own home-cooked food and snacks.

Jummah

The entire Mosque is full during Jummah, with the congregation flowing into the court yard.

One downside is that the entire Khutbah is often in Arabic instead of English.

The Adhan is conducted over a loud speaker. Furthermore, the Adhan can be heard from the Boating Lake in Regents Park during the daytime – a lovely touch.

Huge Mosque in East London. Prayer space for both men and women. Furthermore, it has a large foyer and many facilities.

The East London Mosque, which incorporates the London Muslim Centre and the Maryam Centre, has a rich history, with roots in the London Mosque Fund established in 1910. It has gone on to become one of the most active Islamic institutions in Britain.

Services:

They offer a wide range of services from the complex. In addition to the daily prayers, they have: advice and counselling; education for children and adults; services related to birth, marriage and death; and many more.

Therefore, the brothers have created a small prayer room in the basement of their building, which is used as a restaurant or barber shop (i’m unsure as i’ve only been once). The room is rather small. However, despite this there is still room for women. Finding this prayer room can be tricky. For example, a number of people have left reviews stating that they could not find the prayer room and had to leave. Therefore, the best way to work out the location of this room is to study the photos provided. Furthermore, Jummah is available at this location.
